Description

From Genesis to Revelation, Matthew Henry successfully combines practical application, devotional insight, and scholarship on the entire Bible. Henry has profound insights on the content, message and nature of God's divine revelation. Perfect for all readers of the Bible who want a convenient, comprehensive commentary. Many of the Greek and Hebrew words are hyperlinked to Strong's Enhanced Dictionary (included).

Matthew Henry (1662-1714) was a lover of the Bible from his very early years. After schooling in London, he was ordained in 1687 and pastored in Chester, England, for 25 years. At his home in Chester, Matthew Henry conducted family prayers at the beginning and the end of the day. In the morning he expounded the Old Testament, and in the evening the New Testament. These expositions, amended as the result of questions and comments from his family and his neighbors, are likely the basis of his commentary.

Description

The Expositor’s Bible was first published in eight series, each with six volumes, from 1888 to 1905. Edited by Sir W. Robertson Nicoll, the series featured contributions from twenty-nine prominent preachers from various Protestant backgrounds, emphasizing the shared beliefs across many denominations.

Nicoll, a theological writer, apologist, and literary critic, was well-suited suited for this role. His position as editor of the prestigious British Weekly gave him the necessary access to recruit prominent preachers to the task, and his literary skills added significant value to the volumes.

The Expositor's Bible is a substantial work, instrumental for sermon crafting and scholarly study. The series enjoyed broad distribution among clergymen and ministers in its day, and the truths within these volumes continue to resonate with preachers, teachers, and students of the Word today.

Sir William Robertson Nicoll, the editor, was a distinguished scholar, theological writer, and preacher. Born in Scotland, he served as a minister before moving to England. He earned his MA from the University of Aberdeen in 1870 and was ordained in 1874. In 1884, he became the editor of The Expositor for Hodder and Stoughton. After recovering from typhoid in 1885, he retired from preaching and founded the British Weekly, which he edited until his death in 1923. This publication greatly influenced non-conformist churches in England. Shortly after launching the British Weekly Nicoll began releasing the Expositor's Bible volumes, which he oversaw as editor. In 1909 he was knighted by King Edward VII.

    Description

    G. Campbell Morgan understood the unity and connectedness of every part of the Bible, sharing this understanding through his Analyzed Bible. "Telescopic" in nature, his study focused on the structure of the Bible in broad strokes, leaving others to plumb the depths of individual verses and chapters.

Under Campbell's expert guidance, readers can walk through this soaring panorama of Scripture, gaining the overall contextual understanding of each book's unique place in the whole of Scripture. Each analysis begins with a clearly charted outline, followed by further detail and discussion of the major conceptual divisions contained within that section.

The Analyzed Bible study system lays a solid foundation to understand how the beautiful redemption story of Scripture unfolds. It sets the perfect stage for later study by providing the users a deep grasp of the scope, context, content, and outline of the Bible as a whole.

George Campbell Morgan (1863 - 1945) pastored Westminster Chapel in London from 1904 to 1919, and again from 1933 to 1943 where he mentored Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who would succeed him in the Westminster pulpit.

Morgan had no formal training for ministry, but his commitment to study and teaching of the Word led to his popularity, with thousands in attendance at his weekly Bible classes. In his many trips from his native England to America, Morgan was invited to lecture at Moody Bible Institute and teach at Biola. In 1902 he was given a Doctor of Divinity degree by the Chicago Theological Seminary.

Morgan was a prolific writer, with many works published both during his lifetime and after his death. His most influential essay, The Purposes of the Incarnation, was included in a collection of works called The Fundamentals which is considered to be the spark of the modern Fundamentalist movement.

    Description

The Ironside Expository Commentary is a useful tool for students of God's Word. It not only contains solid biblical exegesis that has stood the test of time, but it is also filled with practical applications and spiritual insights.

Beyond the wealth of biblical knowledge in his writings, Ironside provides a window into what that knowledge means to our world and lives. For example, when commenting on John 13, he expounds on Christ's love: "If you and I have the mind of Christ, this divine love will be manifested in us. If it is not, then all our talk...about standing for the truth goes for very little indeed."

Henry Allen Ironside (1876-1951), considered one of the twentieth century's greatest preachers, was also a prolific writer. With only an eighth-grade education, Ironside became a Captain of the Salvation Army by age 18. Living by faith in God's provision, "HAI" preached widely throughout the United States and abroad. For eighteen years he was pastor of Moody Memorial Church in Chicago. In his prime, he traveled 40 weeks a year, but always made it back in time for Sunday. The self-taught, or rather God-taught, preacher was eventually awarded two honorary doctorates from Wheaton College and Bob Jones University. In all, he wrote fifty-one expositions on Bible books, including all of the New Testament books and many of the Old.

    Description

The 16th century was a dark time for the Church. Whether through ignorance or for personal gain, forgiveness and salvation were reduced to the status of a commodity - bought from the church to fund projects and fill pockets. Access to God's Word was restricted to priests and academics, with little likelihood that it could be read by common people.

It was at this moment in history that a depressed Augustinian monk by the name of Martin Luther left behind his ascetic life to venture into academia. He seemed an unlikely candidate to fill the role of hero, leaving behind the monk's cell, studying and obtaining his degrees, eventually overseeing several monasteries in his role as the vicar of Saxony and Thuringia.

From 1510 to 1520 his lectures on Psalms, Hebrews, Romans, and Galatians prompted a study of his source text in God's Word. His conclusions were inescapable: what he read in God's Word was not what he observed in church practice. Justification, as taught in the Scriptures, was by faith alone, and access to it could not be bought or sold. His efforts to turn the church hierarchy back to the truth of Scripture would eventually split the church, prompt rebellions, and divide society.

His preserved writings underscore his message to us even today, whether hymns, Bible translations into the common tongue, or commentaries on the Word of God. Read here his commentaries, the wisdom that the Scriptures revealed to him, translated for us by Graebner, Gillett and Lenker. They provide insight for all believers to have access to the truth of God's Word.

    Description

    C. H. Mackintosh was a mid-19th century writer associated with the Plymouth Brethren in Dublin, Ireland. Initially a school-master, he established a periodical aimed at young readers, Good News for Young and Old and some pages for the Little Ones. Called to full-time teaching and writing in 1853, his best-known and most enduring work would be the Notes on the Pentateuch, covering the first five books of the Bible.

Mackintosh wrote, in the preface of the fourth edition of the work:

It is an unspeakable privilege to be permitted in any small degree to minister to the souls of those who are so precious to Christ. "Lovest thou me?... Feed my sheep." Such were the touching words of the departing Shepherd; and, assuredly, when they fall powerfully upon the heart, they must rouse all the energies of one's moral being to carry out, in every possible way, the gracious desire breathed therein. To gather and to feed the lambs and sheep of the flock of Christ are the most exalted services in which any one can be engaged. Not a single honest effort put forth for the achievement of such noble ends will be forgotten in that day "when the Chief Shepherd shall appear."

Mackintosh's influence was felt even beyond Brethren circles. D. L. Moody would endorse Mackintosh's writings by noting that, other than the Bible, he would part with his entire library in exchange for Mackintosh's writings.

Charles Henry Mackintosh (1820-1896), the son of a Highland Regiment officer, became a Christian at the age of 18. Moving to Dublin, Ireland he joined the Plymouth Brethren. Founding a school, and later farming, in 1853 he felt the call to full-time Christian service, including writing and teaching.

    Description

Maclaren's Expositions of Holy Scripture offers a multifaceted examination of biblical texts by one of the 19th century's most prominent expositors. This compilation of his sermons showcases his rare blend of sharp intellect, biblical language mastery, and profound reverence for Scripture.

Maclaren's additional interests in poetry, philosophy, and contemporary intellectual trends allowed him to skillfully address the spiritual challenges of his time, but the eternal truths undergirding his work continue to resonate with all generations.

Maclaren's sermons, alongside those of his contemporary Spurgeon, remain highly regarded and continue to impact modern readers. In an age of fluctuating beliefs, Expositions of Holy Scripture provides a steadfast foundation in the enduring hope of the Gospel.

Alexander Maclaren, D.D. (1826-1910) was a Baptist preacher known for his theological insights and oratorical skills. Born in Glasgow, he studied at the University of London and Stepney College, where he became an enthusiastic student of Hebrew and Greek. He began his ministerial career in 1845 at age 19, and in 1858 he became the longstanding pastor of Union Chapel in Manchester. As his reputation spread he received invitations to preach abroad, including an 1889 tour of Australia and New Zealand. Maclaren served terms as president of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Baptist World Congress. He remained at Union Chapel for over 40 years until retiring in 1903 as pastor emeritus, having left an indelible legacy as one of Britain's most renowned and impactful preachers.

    Description

This is one of the most popular Old Testament commentaries available, created by two scholars who deeply respected the authority of Scripture. It examines the historical and literary aspects of the text as well as grammatical and philological issues. It also makes use of the Hebrew words and grammar; but these have been put into context, making it easy to follow the train of thought. Verse references are hyperlinked, and many Greek and Hebrew words are linked to Strong's Enhanced Dictionary, which is included; Greek and Hebrew fonts are also included. Because the text of the commentary itself is searchable, one can look up every place where the authors mention a word or use a certain phrase in English.

All of these features make the Olive Tree Bible App version of the Keil and Delitzsch Commentary on the Old Testament (10 Vols.) especially useful and time-saving. The dictionary entries for Hebrew and Greek words and the Bible verses that are referenced throughout the commentary can be easily viewed in a second window and are always one tap away.

For best display, make sure Strong's Numbers are turned off in your Olive Tree Bible App Settings.
